I-CARE® Inc. Personal Care Aide Program
Defining Home Health Services
Home health services encompass long-term care for individuals with chronic conditions, and payment for these services is often covered through Medicare, a federal health insurance program for the elderly and disabled, as well as Medicaid, a medical assistance program for low-income individuals and those with disabilities. Medicare pays a fixed amount for a 60-day period of care based on the client's condition. Home health agencies must have a referral system in place to receive patients, and they must adhere to a chain of command, maintaining a professional relationship with both the client and employer. Home health aides provide activities of daily living (ADLs) assistance and must follow a care plan while respecting the client's confidentiality and rights. It is important for home health aides to demonstrate qualities such as compassion, tact, and conscientiousness, while understanding their scope of practice and reporting any suspected abuse or neglect. Policies and procedures are in place to guide their actions and ensure ethical and legal standards are met.
